Equipment for one to three days mountain hike

Hiking in the mountains can be a very nice experience. To make this experience even more pleasant, it is important to have appropriate equipment. Below are lists of required and optional sportswear/equipment for safe and comfortable hiking in the Slovenian Alps.

For hiking in the medium mountain Alps region (between 1500 and 2000 m, which is 4900 to 6500 ft):

Required sportswear

  • Underwear T-shirt dry fit with UV protection (or something similar)
  • Short and long hiking pants
  • High and short hiking socks
  • Fleece jacket and thermo jacket
  • Wind stopper jacket
  • Warm cap or band and buff tube
  • Gloves
  • If you plan to overnight in the mountains, you will need additional warm clothing – clothes for staying overnight in a mountain hut (underwear, long sleeve T shirt, vest, sweats).
  • One of the most important things you will need for enjoyable hiking are over the ankle hiking boots. Never take brand new boots for a long walk! Make sure, if you buy a new pair, to break in the new boots, starting with short walks. Also, use appropriate socks to protect your feet from blisters.

Why is it important that shoes are over the ankle? It is much more comfortable to walk with sport shoes or low-cut hiking shoes. However, mountain paths are rocky and uneven, and when you hike downhill, you are usually tired. With high-cut boots, you can protect your ankles from an injury and make your trip enjoyable.

Optional equipment

  • Waterproof backpack (30 to 40 L)
  • Helmet and head light (available upon request)
  • Walking poles (available upon request)
  • Camera, cell phone
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Medicine
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks and water or some other drinks (can be purchased in mountain huts, but will be expensive)
  • 2 Plastic bags (for garbage & used clothes)
  • Personal documents
  • Money

When you put all these things in your backpack, put them in plastic bags for two reasons.

First: you can differentiate between a bag with clothes and a bag with your personal hygiene products. So you won’t need to take everything out to find what you are looking for.

Second: weather in the mountains can change very quickly. In a short amount of time, the weather can change from warm sun to heavy rain. When you reach your final destination, you will want to have dry clothes to enjoy the rest of the day without being cold.
