Path of Remembrance and Comradeship
This annual event is held at the beginning of May, and it is a reminder of the time when Ljubljana was surrounded by barbed wire during the Second World War. It attracts more than 30,000 participants every year. This is a march for people of all ages – from preschool to adult. It is a relatively easy 32.5 km (20.2 miles) route with 8 organized control points. Individual participants can choose both the starting point and how much of the route to walk. At control points, the marchers collect control stamps. Some of the points are close to bars where food or refill supplies of water are available. Participants will receive special recognition for marching the entire route which takes from 6 to 8 hours.
Today, the 12-ft wide gravel path has more than 7,000 trees along both sides, several outdoor fitness machines, and 102 monuments dedicated to the memory of World War II.
