Ljubljana Marathon: A small marathon with a big soul

The Ljubljana Marathon is the biggest running event in Slovenia. The first marathon was held in 1996, and there were only 673 runners (mostly from Slovenia) participating. With enthusiastic desire to develop a big event, the marathon was growing, and in 2006 there were around 7,000 runners from Slovenia and other European countries. After two decades, there are more than 20,000 participants every year from different countries around the world.

In 1996, Ljubljana, as a small city, had roads totaling only 21 kilometers, so participants had to run two laps to finish the marathon. The second lap was boring: same places, same views. Also, being so close to the finish line, yet needing to run another 21 kilometers, was frustrating. In 2014, the 19th annual marathon, this way of thinking was challenged. By then, Ljubljana was big enough to offer enough roads for one lap! Since then, there is only lap, 42 kilometers long.

Running on the picturesque Ljubljana streets, loud supporters and music groups along the route, and the kind and friendly people at the event can help you to finish your marathon with pleasure.

For those who don’t want to run the whole marathon, options include competing in a half-marathon, a 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) recreational run or a 3.5 kilometer (2 miles) FUN RUN with or without a costume.
