Quick Slovenian History

In the previous blog, we learned about where Slovenia is located, which gave it more trouble than stability. Now, we’ll learn more about its political history.

People have inhabited the region of Slovenia for over 250,000 years.

The Roman Empire left its footprint, and in the 4th century, Slavs from the East migrated to this mild, fertile region. We still speak their language.

After the Slavic migration, the region merged with many powers: the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman Empire, the Illyrian provinces, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croatians, and Slovenes. In 1929, it was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Brief history.

In 1945, after World War II, it became the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. Then, in 1990, Slovenia emerged for the first time ever as an independent nation.

Historically, Slovenia has belonged to every one of its neighbors, and then some: Italy, Austria, Hungary, Germany, France, and Turkey.

Today, independent Slovenia is about the size of New Jersey, with 2 million environmentally-conscious people. Slovenia boasts the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, both of which you can tour in a day.

But Mateja Travel won’t rush the process. We want you to soak up every ounce of beautiful scenery, tasty food, delicious wine, and hidden pathways. We’ll spend more than a day in the Alps, and more than a day by the Mediterranean Sea.

Also, due to historical influences and varying climates (Alps, Mediterranean, Pannonian plain, Karst Plateau), you’ll be able to experience the richest variety of local cuisines featuring Slovenia’s award-winning olive oils.

Come, experience what made the emperors so possessive of this land. Get the most out of our trips, because Mateja Travel puts the most into them!
