KARST HALF-MARATHON AND HOLLYWOOD MOVIES

Could you compete with a Lipizzaner horse? Well, not directly, but the Karst Half-Marathon racecourse goes just past the world-famous Lipizza Stable. The tracks lead through the idyllic Karst geoscapes in Slovenia and Italy. Music groups accompany the rich landscape and make it easier for competitors to handle the kilometers. Warm-ups are organized for runners, depending on the race.

The first full marathon (also half marathon and 9.5 K (5.9 miles)) in Slovenia’s road running calendar is the Istrski maraton, Slovenija, or Istrian Marathon (as in the geographic region, Istria). Scheduled for the first weekend in April, the race runs through the three main cities on the Slovenian coast: Koper, Izola, and Piran. The curious thing about this marathon: the Start rotates among different towns, so the marathon is never the same!

RUN OF TRIOS, 29K, & 12.5K

SLOVENIAN HISTORY

This three-member team race, held in the beginning of May, is a unique running event–the idea for it came from Allied solidarity and partnership during World War II. This historical annual event attracts increasing numbers of competitors for the 29 K and 12.5 K routes (18.3 miles/7.1 miles), which wind through the famous Ljubljana streets. The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship is held at the beginning of May; it’s a reminder of the time when Ljubljana was surrounded by barbed wire during World War II. More than 30,000 participants of all ages compete each year – from preschool to adult. It’s a socially engaging, gentle 32.5 km route (20.2 miles) with eight organized control points.

Organized in Radenci in 1981, the Three Hearts Marathon (also 21 K, 10 K and 5 K) attracts several thousand people each year. Since 1436, Radenci (formerly Radein) has been known as the spa for curing heart disease. Its legendary mineral water heals the body and the mind. It’s so clean you can drink it straight from the spring, or fill a bathtub to luxuriate in its bubbles. Top quality health and Radenci’s 250 days of sunshine make this a race of place. KONJICE HALF-MARATHON, 10K & 5K

The Konjice marathon is known for its special care for competitors, its genuine community, and its top-level organization. The gift bag is worth more than the entry fee! Over two hundred musicians perform at the Start and along the route, all the way to the Finish. Thus, runners are motivated by a new musical sound every kilometer; meanwhile, the Finish offers a true musical spectacle, as medals are awarded to winners and participants. Because of this excellence, the Konjice Marathon is one of the few recreational events to have earned the prestigious Athletic Association of Slovenia Award!

VOLKSWAGEN LJUBLJANA MARATHON & CLASSICAL SLOVENIA

Registered in the IAAF calendar, the Ljubljana Marathon, organized at the end of October, is the biggest running event in Slovenia. The first marathon was held in 1996, and there were only 673 runners (mostly from Slovenia) participating. With enthusiastic desire to develop a big event, the marathon was growing, and in 2006 there were around 7,000 runners from Slovenia and other European countries. After two decades, there are more than 20,000 participants every year from different countries around the world.

For those who don’t want to run the whole marathon, options include competing in a half-marathon, a 10 K (6.2 miles) recreational run or a 3.5 K (2 miles) FUN RUN with or without a costume.
