CROSS THE ALPS TO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

$2250 per person

We’ll begin our adventure at the train station in Arnoldstein, Austria. Beautiful trails will lead us from Austria to Slovenia. We’ll trail run through the amazing scenery of the Julian Alps, over stunning passes, and we’ll see beautiful waterfalls. We’ll run along the charming Bohinj Lake and the world-famous Bled Lake, Bled Lake gorge, and Bled Castle.

We’ll spend a big chunk of the adventure in Triglav National Park, with majestic views of the Julian Alps peaks, going almost up to 3000 meters (9843 ft).

We’ll return to the Soča Valley after our running adventure around Bled – this time to Tolmin and the surrounding Alps, which will be the final stretch of our alpine trail running trip. We’ll continue towards Vipava Valley, which is known for its tasty local wines and incredible local cuisine. Of course, we’ll make sure to visit the world-famous Postojna cave.

We’ll finish off our epic adventure by discovering Reka gorge and Škocjan cave. Our trip ends in the majestic and historically important Trieste, where we’ll enjoy a peaceful swim in the Adriatic Sea.

Day 1: Cross the Border: From Austria to Slovenia
Arnoldstein - Kranjska Gora From Arnoldstein we’ll run to Tromeja (1508 m, 4948 ft) along the border of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. We’ll descend to Planica, the world-famous ski flying hill. We’ll have dinner and spend the night in Kranjska Gora, a staggering alpine resort just under the majestic peaks of the Alps. We simply can’t overlook these beautiful surroundings either, such as the picturesque Lake Jasna and the nature preserve Zelenci – the source of Sava dolinka river.

Day 2: From one Valley to another: Kranjska gora – Trenta (Soča Valley)
Your second stage starts in Kranjska Gora and takes you by Lake Jasna, which offers stunning views of the Julian Alps. Your main climb of the day begins soon after that – towards Vršič (1700 m). The trail takes you along a glacial valley and right under some majestic mountains. You’ll also be able to experience some history, as you’ll be running along a mule track, built during WWII. Once we cross Vršič pass and begin our descent, we pass the source of the pristine Soča River, which stuns us with its truly unique emerald colour. Our final goal for the day is Trenta Valley, one of the biggest natural gems in Slovenia.

Day 3: Breathtaking Views: Trenta - Triglav Seven Lakes Valley– Lake Bohinj
Stage four takes you along stunning alpine single trails, just under Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav (2864 m). The trails meander along the Triglav Lakes valley, one of the most picturesque valleys in Slovenia. This stage allows you to get to know the heart of Triglav National Park, which has stayed in its pristine form until today, due to its degree of protection and conservation. Along the way, you’ll pass mountain huts, offering resupplies and respite for your journey. Bohinj is another dream destination for outdoor lovers, so you can also choose to stay there a day or two longer and try some additional activities.

Day 4: Pure Joy: Lake Bled with Vintgar Gorge and Castle - day off
A train will take us to Blejska dobrava where we’ll run / hike through Vintgar gorge, an amazing naturescape. Your run will finish off with an easy uphill to Bled Castle, from which you’ll be able to take in incredible views over the lake. Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most well-known tourist destinations. Its scenery is captivating, with its unique island and towering mountain views! We’ll ride the boat to the island in the afternoon. You can also enjoy a swim in Bled Lake during warmer months.

Day 5: Follow the Footprints of Death Train: Transfer to Soča Valley (Tolmin)
A train will take us from Bled (through the tunnel where Death Train was filmed) to Most na Soči, where we’ll start jogging towards Tolmin. Then you’ll be able to choose one of the courses offered by our Soča Outdoor Festival (10 km, 15 km, 25 km or 45 km) for your final run of the day. You can decide how to spend your afternoon: rafting, paragliding, kayaking, or canyoning along the breathtaking emerald Soča River. Dinner and the overnight stay will be in Tolmin or a nearby village.

Day 6: Change of Scenery: From the Alps to the Karst Plateau
After breakfast we’ll take a train through the beautiful Soča Valley to Solkan at the end of Vipava Valley. From there you’ll be able to enjoy part of our well-marked Ultra Vipava Valley 160 km Emperor trail. Dinner and the overnight stay will be in Ajdovščina. For those who like wine, this is the perfect night for a wine tasting!

Day 7: To the top of the Karst
From Ajdovščina we’ll start climbing towards Nanos, the high karst plateau along the mountain barrier between the continental part of Slovenia and the coast. Once we reach the top, we’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Ljubljana region. Dinner and the overnight stay will be in Eko Hut Nanos.

Day 8: Visit a Human Fish!
Start the morning run at Eko Hut Nanos, following a beautiful ridge of Mount Nanos to the top (1313 m), which is the highest point of today’s journey. We’ll descend to the medieval Predjama Castle and then enjoy an afternoon visit to the world famous Postojna cave, the largest show cave in Europe! Dinner and the overnight stay will be in a hotel in Postojna.

Day 9: See the Alps and Mediterranean in one glance!
A train will take us to Gornje Ležeče, where we’ll begin our morning run to Vremščica (1027 m, 3396 ft). If we get lucky with the weather, we’ll be able to enjoy views of the Julian Alps, Dolomites, and our final destination – the Adriatic Sea. From there we’ll descend to Famlje and follow the Reka River to the Škocjan caves, which will be one of the biggest highlights. The Škocjan Caves remain the only monument in Slovenia and the Classical Karst region on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural world heritage sites. Thus, they hold a significant position among the world’s natural monuments. Dinner in Rodik and overnight stay in a B&B.

Day 10: Trieste, Italy: Try World Famous Coffee Illy!
We’ll enjoy a short hike from Kozina through the beautiful Val Rosandra valley on your last day, which will take us to the Adriatic Sea and the city of Trieste with its rich history. You can enjoy a swim in the Adriatic Sea during warmer months, so this is the perfect destination to finish off your epic trail running adventure. Our final destination is Trieste, which was a strategic port for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also prides itself on its fascinating cultural and architectural history. We’ll enjoy a short hike from Kozina through the beautiful Val Rosandra valley on your last day, which will take us to the Adriatic Sea and the city of Trieste with its rich history. You can enjoy a swim in the Adriatic Sea during warmer months, so this is the perfect destination to finish off your epic trail running adventure.
